Elements and Performance Criteria
- Plan and prepare for guided boring
- Access, interpret and apply guided boring documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
- Bore pilot hole
- Carry out pre-start and start up procedures
- Identify, select and apply rig operational controls
- Fit locating device to drill head and attach drill head to drill stem
- Align drilling head with survey tool and survey control system
- Drill pilot hole according to design alignment
- Monitor drill path ensuring pilot hole meets conformance envelope and dogleg severity is within limits
- Add drill stem sections as required
- Steer, and where required, zone steer drill head to achieve required pitch and direction
- Monitor and interpret all gauge/dial readings
- Monitor and interpret drill fluid return and drill spoil
- Monitor and interpret drill head position and pitch
- Maintain communication with all relevant personnel
- Maintain drill log and reports as required
- Complete back reaming, and product pull back
- Lock out machine
- Remove drill head
- Check free rotation of swivel
- Connect appropriate back reamer, swivel and product
- Locate product feed to prevent damage and within breakover limitations
- Check all safety precautions are in place and restart machine
- Back reaming/pre-ream, and install product, removing drill stem sections
- Monitor and interpret all gauge/dial readings
- Monitor and interpret drill fluid flow from both ends of hole
- Monitor product feed
- Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
- Take required actions to achieve satisfactory product installation as required
- Maintain drill log and reports as required
- Respond to problems
- Identify possible problems in equipment or process
- Determine problems needing action
- Determine possible fault causes
- Rectify problem using appropriate solution within area of responsibility
- Follow through items initiated until final resolution has occurred
- Report problems outside area of responsibility to designated person
- Complete equipment maintenance and housekeeping
- Carry out shutdown and secure equipment
- Monitor wear on drill stem, particularly threads
- Dress damaged threads or replace drill stem as required
- Check all equipment and hoses
- Monitor wear on drill heads and reamers and take required action
- Clean all equipment upon completion of bore, ensuring environmental controls are followed
- Rotate drill stems in stack
- Ensure drill fluid is appropriately contained/disposed of
- Ensure maintenance schedules are followed
- Ensure housekeeping activities are completed
